In a retreat years ago, we played a game. The rules of the game were explained, and after strategizing, each group made a move in turn. After many moves, we were all called back to the same room for the announcement of the winner. Both groups lost.

It was then shown how both groups could have won. I still remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when they shared that information, and how clear the win/win strategy appeared when pointed out. It was so obvious when they pointed it out, and not one of the 60 something people saw it.

It was humbling to say the least, yet one of the most profound lessons in my life. What was even more interesting is that if either group started to move with the win/win strategy, the other group would have picked up on it and followed the strategy.

Well, as humbling as it was, it has stuck in my head from that point on. I continue to be delighted and amazed at how many win/win solutions have been found within my own life, and within client situations.

To this day I still keep a high alert watch on this competitive gene within me (and still get humbled by it now and then), being sure it stays off the automatic mode.

Win/Win, yeah, its possible. Now that is a challenge I hope we all take on.
